During South Africa’s summer season, Shamwari Private Game Reserve expands its offering even further by opening the Explorer Camp.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience takes guests on a guided walking safari of the surrounding land, allowing you to get up close and personal with nature.

Shamwari firmly believes that travel needs to be simplified by going back to basics. This package not only reflects the core ideals of their safaris, but aims to deliver an eye-opening encounter with nature.

The Explorer Camp is discreetly fenced for safety reasons but retains true explorer ambiance. The tents are placed in close proximity without encroaching on the other tents’ privacy, while the camp is located on a plateau set among the only basalt and granite extrusions on Shamwari – a truly magical setting.

Explorer Camp Shamwari

Shamwari Private Game Reserve expands its offering from October to May annually by opening the Explorer Camp, a unique experience that takes guests on a guided walking safari of the surrounding land, allowing one to get up close and personal with nature. This wilderness bush camp itinerary comprises of a minimum 2-night trail, operational Tuesday and Wednesday, and Friday and Saturday with an optional 3rd night (Sunday) on request.

The Explorer Camp tents are simplistic yet comfortably equipped with all the modern amenities required to add extra ambiance and comfort. Each suite comes with 2 single beds that can convert into a king size, an en-suite bathroom equipped with a shower, as well as useful amenities such as shampoo, shower gel and insect repellent, among others. Culinary feasts are presented around the camp fire with exquisite silverware. And best of all, guests wake up to tea and coffee, served in front of their tents. There is also a classic portable bar with crystal glassware to enjoy the traditional gin and tonic on the viewing deck.

Guided by trained rangers, you can experience wildlife interactions unlike any other during the daily bush walks, and experience fauna and flora indigenous to the Eastern Cape Region. The malaria-free area of the Eastern Cape is home to an extensive range of wildlife, as well as a host of beautiful birds, from tiny feathered friends to majestic birds of prey.

The Shamwari Explorer Camp is suitable for people between the ages of 16 and 65.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE EXPLORER CAMP, SHAMWARI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE, EASTERN CAPE Follow the N2 out of Gqeberha heading towards Grahamstown. Continue on the N2 until you reach a sign board for Shamwari Private Game Reserve and turn left towards Paterson on the R342. Travel 7 km up the gravel road and enter at the 2nd gate for the Welcome Lounge.
