Kruger National Park Best Walking Safaris - Private Lodges & Camps - South Africa
We take a look at our best walking safari experiences in the Kruger National Park. Apart from the morning guided bush walks which can be booked with SANPARKS rangers, there are a few lodges & camps that focus solely on walking safari activities in the Kruger National Park.
We will explore the Rhino Walking Safari Camp or Plains Tented Camp near Skukuza and The Pafuri Walking Trail in the northern part of Kruger National Park, Africa on Foot Safari Camp in the Klaserie, Wilderness Trail in the Balule private reserve, Simbavati Trails Camp in the Timbavati and Klaserie Sands Safari Trail in the Klaserie.
Walking trails here take you through one of Africa’s largest fever-tree forests as well as riverine fig forests, thorny woodland guarded by immense baobabs, and river gorges deep enough to block out the sun. Such diversity attracts a huge variety of animals, insects, and birds – it’s a twitcher’s delight with over 450 species.
The Pafuri Walking Trail explores the Makuleke Contractual Part located in the remotest part of northern Kruger giving you the chance of close encounters with the big 5 whilst having the opportunity to appreciate the finer details of the African bush. Professional safari guides share their intimate knowledge of Pafuri, all of its inhabitants, and its history.
This is an unrivaled walking safari country. You’ll call a seasonal bush camp home, where you’re served with fuel for the next day’s trek: rich food and drink in hearty portions. Walking safaris open from April to October each year, allowing bush lovers to celebrate a rarely-explored place that is as vast and varied as it is wild. These trails offer guests the opportunity to focus on the little things, whilst also experiencing the rush of adrenaline when you happen upon the Big Five.
You can expect to encounter an array of changing landscapes, from bushveld to riverine forests, mountains to floodplains, and perennial pans which all attract a spectacular variety of animals and birds. Discover forests of fever trees, groves of baobabs, and a diverse collection of wildlife. Highlights of the experience include visits to Crook’s Corner, where the Luvuvhu and Limpopo Rivers meet, Lanner Gorge, and the fever tree forest.
In 1978 SANParks offered visitors to the park the opportunity to walk in the Kruger National Park with armed guides which proved to be a massive success in the ensuing years. Rhino Walking Safaris identified the need for a similar opportunity to be offered to discerning clients wanting to be close to nature, but with more of a ‘glamping’ feel. Since 2002 Plains Camp has filled this niche in the tourism market by providing specialist walking safaris in the Kruger National Park.
Early morning walking trails depart the camp at sunrise, either on foot, or driving out to an area hand-picked by your guide, and then walking from there. You will walk accompanied by two armed guides who have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. Enjoy tracking animals, identifying spoor, dung, and plants, learning about animal behavior and the medicinal and traditional cultural uses of various plants and trees. Make the most of photographic opportunities, bird watching and all the while keeping an eye out for general game and predators.
Stop to study the small things, smell and taste wild herbs, and enjoy refreshments in the shade of a tree. Until you have walked in the big game territory, it is hard to conceive the actual height of a giraffe, or just how enormous, silent and gentle an elephant really is. It is also a heart-stopping privilege to round a corner and surprise sleeping lions or buffalo grazing. Return on time for a hearty brunch, followed by a swim, nap or time spent spying on nature from the comfort of the camp.
High tea is served in the late afternoon, followed by a short walk, sundowners in the bush and a game drive, returning after dark with spotlights with the opportunity to view nocturnal animals on the prowl. Share drinks and stories around the fire before a delicious dinner with a South African twist. Then turn in and tune out, lying between cotton percale sheets on a comfy bed with nothing but a canvas to filter the night sounds of the bush.
